Ward off Climate Change

About the author

Gary Warden was raised in the Perth Hills. After graduating from the University of Western Australia with a degree in Geology, Gary joined BHP Billiton where he spent 18 years working in a variety of roles in a number of locations around the world. Prior to leaving BHP Billiton in December 2006, Gary was Global Manager for the company's US$1Billion business improvement program.

While he was originally sceptical about the claims relating to climate change, he became convinced of the urgency of the issue in early 2006. He left BHP Billiton primarily to spend more time with his young family, but also to dedicate himself to helping to ward off climate change.

In September 2007 he was trained by Al Gore and has delivered the "Inconvenient Truth" lectures to thousands of west australians since then. In November 2007 Gary ran for the senate in the Federal Election representing the Climate Change Coalition.

In addition to his climate change lectures, he facilitates Living Smart workshops across Perth. In September 2008 he was elected to the Executive Committee of the Conservation Council of WA and he is also Executive Director of the very exciting Days of Change program that aims to engage 200,000 West Australians to take simple steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions during March 2010.

Solar Taxi in Perth

by Gary 3/12/2008 10:15:00 AM

I was very fortunate to attend a breakfast hosted by the RAC and the WA Sustainable Energy Association last week.

In addition to excellent speeches by RAC President David Moir and Greens WA MP Paul Llewellyn, the main purpose of the event was to welcome to Perth Louis Palmer and his Solar Taxi.

Louis gave a particularly inspring presentation on his exploits as he makes his way around the world in the solar powered car that he build in his home town of Lucerne, Switzerland.

He has nicknamed the car the Solar Taxi as he has been taking the opportunity to take people for drives in the car to show them the benefits of the technology.

The car has a top speed of 90km/h and a range of 300km, which can be extended to 400km with the addition of a trailer equipped with solar panels.

Louis is wanting to prove that solar technology can be used to produce a zero emissions car that would suit the needs of the vast majority of commuters.

Most commuters do less than 30km in their daily commute, and drive to work as the sole occupant of the car. Louis claims that his car could be mass produced for as little as $10,000.

Perth represents the halfway point for Louis' trip around the world. From here he heads to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Kunming, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Osaka, Tokyo, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Chicago.
